Third grade class at Taft celebrates kindness with STEAM family activities

Families at Taft Elementary in Maya Perez’s third grade class were treated to a special kindness STEAM celebration, bringing loved ones together to celebrate all things science, technology, art and math.

STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math, becoming an essential part of curriculum in several schools throughout the district. STEAM learning gives students the chance to further develop problem solving, communication and critical thinking skills, while discovering a passion for science and math.

This initiative not only allowed families to tap into their creativity and engineering skills, but also gave parents a special glimpse into their child’s classroom during the school day. This opportunity further fosters the connection between school and home, bridging education in the classroom and beyond.

“I think it's great that they invited parents to come take part,” said Diana Corrado, mother of Victor. “I want to see what's going on in the classroom. You usually only get to go in for parent teacher conferences, it's nice to see a fun activity that they're doing in the classroom.”

The celebration consisted of several STEAM based stations, created by classroom parents, including building 3D items with toothpicks and marshmallows, crafting paper airplanes and a hands-on cup stacking team activity using string and rubber bands.

"It's fun to be able to come in here and have this time with him and see how his class works," said Liz DeYoung, parent of two children at Taft.
