First, second-grade and ASPIRE students at Taft Elementary School filled the lunchroom last Friday, as local firefighters from the Washingtonville and Salisbury Mills fire departments prepared to speak with the students about fire safety.
During the presentation, students learned various safety tips including what to do if they suspect there is a fire, who they should call, and how to remain calm.
Firefighters showed students the different tools that they use and when they would use them. For example, firefighters brought a thermal imaging camera and showed students what it looks like when they looked inside it. Firefighters explained that the camera allows them to see people when they are in areas of low visibility.
“I really wanted to learn about the thermal camera,” said second grader Christopher Cochi, “I liked being able to see the camera and all the other equipment firefighters use.”
During the presentation, one of the firefighters showed students the process of getting dressed up in full gear and what the different equipment on their suits are for.
Then, students headed outside where they were greeted by more firefighters and were able to see the different tools inside the fire trucks. Students were able to ask questions and go inside the fire truck to take a look around.
After the presentation, a few students shared what they enjoyed about the presentation and what they learned.
“I liked seeing the firetrucks and learning about fire safety,” said second grader Lawrence Berben.
